Description

Zachary Taylor: Half-Plate Daguerreotype from the Taylor Family. This portrait of General Zachary Taylor, hero of the Mexican War and 12th President of the United States, shows him as he appeared circa 1843-1845. The detail on this ¾ standing view is incredible with whisker stubble clearly visible, as "Old Rough and Ready" faces the photographer in an unknown studio setting. We have been unable to determine the photographer, but it may have been Maguire of New Orleans. This imposing image descended directly in the family of Zachary Taylor, through his son-in-law Robert Crooke Wood to the current consignor. A copy of the line of descent or provenance, on Taylor Family stationery, will be included in the lot. Light scratches on the corners, a result of the metal plate shifting in the frame, original paper seals with remnants of sealing wax. It is housed in a 5.75" x 7" burgundy leather case with gold stamped designs (cover detached).
