Description

A Magnificent Set of Thoreau, Number 1, with Eighteen Pages of Manuscript in Thoreau's Hand

Henry David Thoreau. The Writings of Henry David Thoreau. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1906.

Manuscript Edition, one of 600 numbered copies, this being copy number "1," with nine leaves (eighteen pages) of manuscript mounted in Volume I (normally, this edition has only one or two leaves mounted in volume I). Each volume with two frontispieces inserted, one a photograph of flowers, the other a hand-colored scene. Other illustrations inserted throughout.

Beautifully bound by the publisher in full dark green levant morocco. Covers triple-ruled and paneled in gilt, with a floral pattern, spine elaborately tooled in a floral pattern and lettered in gilt in compartments, gilt board edges and turn-ins, cream-colored morocco doublures paneled in gilt in a floral pattern, with the gilt central ex libris ownership stamp of Marie C. B. Boggs, cream-colored silk liners. Top edge gilt, others uncut. Spines uniformly slightly sunned, some light rubbing to edges, a few covers with minor scuffing to either covers or spine, previous owner's bookplate on the gilt ownership ex libris (some have fallen off), with some light glue residue. Still, this set is in fine condition.

The manuscript leaves are written in pencil and are heavily corrected with some pages with entire blocks of text struck through (in addition, two entire leaves are struck through, indicating that they were never published). These present a rare and tantalizing look at the working process of one of America's leading writers and thinkers.
