"Reflection of Shepard" Original Painting of Gordon Cooper's Spacesuit by NASA Legend Ron Woods. A unique and beautiful 10" x 13" watercolor painting of Gordon Cooper's Mercury spacesuit showing a reflection of Alan Shepard; it is "standing" in front of the Mercury 7 Monument at Cape Canaveral's Pad 14 with a blastoff of a Mercury capsule visible behind, flames and all. The names of the seven brave original astronauts float in the background. Ron explains the origins of this painting: "The 'Reflection of Shepard' was painted from a photograph that I had taken in the Debus Center at Kennedy Space Center because of a request I had received to paint a Mercury suit. I am not sure how the image of Shepard appeared since it was not in the line of site of the camera. It was not intentional on my part, but I am so pleased it is there. The next phase was to paint a background. I often go to pad 34 at Cape Canaveral, to clean the plaque for the Apollo 1 crew- an honor that was passed on to me by a great friend. Just south of that is the Mercury launch pad and the stainless Mercury 7 marker. When I saw and photographed the monument, it was then I decided on the background for 'Reflection of Shepard' and then, of course, you couldn't leave out the Mercury vehicle lifting off and the names of the Original Seven. So many times I was honored to see and listen to Deke and Al as they talked with the Apollo Crews during suit up." A great opportunity to own a stunning work of art from an artist who paints from a unique insider's viewpoint.Ron Woods is well-known to many space collectors for his work at NASA in the area of spacesuit technology (not to mention his art). Since 1982, he has worked in the Flight Crew Systems Facility at KSC with responsibilities in processing flight hardware for the Space Shuttle Crew module and payload bay. This includes pre-flight testing of hardware and post flight testing. Equipment includes EVA and Launch/ Entry suits, camera equipment, food, clothing, flight data files, contingency tools and mission specific tools for Hubble upgrades, etc. Prior to this assignment, Ron was a NASA suit technician supporting STS-1 through 5. During the Apollo program Ron worked for ILC as a suit technician performing suit maintenance, interface testing with the Command Module, Lunar Module, and Lunar Rover vehicles, and insertion of astronauts in Command & Lunar modules for training. He suited crewmembers for Apollo 8, 11, 15, all Skylab missions, and Apollo Soyuz. He also assisted engineering in the development of the Shuttle suit components.
