Description

Hacha in the form of an Armadillo

Veracruz
Ça 600-900 AD
Carved gray stone

9½" High x 8¼" Wide

Hachas such as this one were used in playing the ancient Mesoamerican ballgame. Their practical use is not yet known, but they are most often found associated with stone yokes, heavy U shaped belts used in ceremonial play. Some scholars have suggested that the figures found on hachas relate to the lineage of the players or, perhaps, the name of their team. This armadillo's body curves to fit the form of the hacha.
