Description

Maya Vessel with Bundle Scene

Maya
Ça 600-800 AD
Slipped and painted ceramic

8½" High x 4¾" Wide

This vessel forms a canvas for a fanciful painting. A prancing character dressed as the Wind Deity, Ik, supports the flaming bundle of a character who appears to be playing a game with an aged personage also burdened by a flaming bundle. Another Ik impersonator supports the aged personage's bundle. The Wind Deity, Ik, is recognized by his duck bill-like mask and his eye painted in the form of a cross. The vessel is banded by many hieroglyphs, but, unfortunately, they are quite eroded. It is possible that a conservator, using special lighting, could make the outlines visible.
