Description

Set of Red Faced, Gray Lined Wool Shoulder Straps with Accompanying Nineteenth Century Ink Script Tag: "Straps Taken From Rebel Artillery Jacket/ Donor E. H. Rhodes July 4/ 88" E. H. Rhodes is, of course, Elisha Hunt Rhodes of the 2nd Rhode Island Inf., and Ken Burns' PBS series Civil War fame. The straps are 5.5" long, 2.5" wide at the end with hand stitched button holes. A few minor spots of mothing at one edge, negligible, else perfect condition. The set is accompanied by books No. 1 and 7 of Rhodes' "Personal Narratives of the Battles of the Rebellion". Both in fine condition which are in and of themselves very rare. Rhodes enlisted as a Corporal in the 2nd RI on June 5, 1861, and served with the regiment throughout the war, rising to the rank of Colonel on March 2, 1865. During his term of service the regiment was engaged in every major action of the Army of the Potomac including, Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, The Wilderness, etc. The regiment lost 120 men killed and mortally wounded during their term of service. A great group from one of the "stars" of the PBS series.
