Preliminary Painting of Cover Art for "The Cricket in Times Square" Signed by Garth Williams

Garth Williams. Original painting and preliminary sketches for the dust jacket design of The Cricket in Times Square by George Selden, 1960. Original painting in ink and watercolor/gouache on stiff paper, measuring approximately 10.875 x 6.875 inches. Painting features front cover and spine lettering and design. Williams has written at bottom of sheet: "This scene is the farewell feast in the drain-pipe. Cricket sits on a sugar-lump. Lettering like T. Sq. neons." The verso contains this note in Williams' hand: "Customs declaration item A." (Williams was sending much of his artwork to New York from his home in Mexico.) Also on the back: "Garth: This one, please - Hal. Note: ARIEL BOOKS on spine, not FSC. HDV." (Hal Vursell was Williams' editor at Ariel Books, an imprint of Farrar, Straus and Cudahy.) Signed in full by Garth Williams on the front. Also included are six rough sketches, measuring 10.625 x 8.25 inches. Pencil on paper. A few shallow folds at corners. All initialed by Williams. All generally fine. From the Estate of Garth Williams.
