Description
Gemini Astronauts Signed Color Photograph, 11" x 13.5", matted to 15.25" x 19.25", picturing a Gemini launch, signed by all ten Gemini crews. Some secretarial signatures. Lovell, Conrad, and Young each flew on two Gemini missions; two signatures each. Signed "Gus Grissom/ Molly Brown/ GT-3 23 Mar 65," "John Young," "James Lovell GT-7," "Frank Borman GT-7," "Neil Armstrong VIII," "Dave Scott VIII," "Edward H. White II," "Tom Stafford GT-6, GT-9," "Gene Cernan/ Gemini IX," "James A. McDivitt/ IV," "W. M. Schirra," "James Lovell," "Edwin E. Aldrin Jr.," "Gordon Cooper/ [drawing of Conestoga wagon] Gemini V," "Charles Conrad, Jr.," "R.F. Gordon/ Gemini XI," "Charles Conrad, Jr.," "John Young/ GTA-X," and "Michael Collins/ 7/18-21/66." Where an astronaut didn't do it himself, flight dates have been neatly penned next to some of the signatures, possibly by another astronaut. Secretarial signatures are as follows: McDivitt's signature, Young's second signature at right edge, Schirra signature at bottom left, Lovell and Aldrin at top middle, and the second Conrad near middle. Inscribed in the lower right in unknown hand "Presented to:/ MSgt Joe D. Garino USAF/ By the United States Astronauts/ January 5, 1967/ Houston Texas." The last Gemini flight, GT-12, landed on November 15, 1966. On January 27, 1967, just 22 days after this signed photograph was presented to Joe Garino, two of the signers, Gus Grissom and Edward H. White, were killed in the Apollo 1 spacecraft flash fire during a launch pad test at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The NASA 'vector' patch (also referred to as 'meatball' patch) affixed on the lower mat. This white-bordered insignia was worn as the official NASA logo during the Mercury and Gemini programs; the white border was changed to blue for Apollo. Of the 16 different Gemini astronauts signing (19 signatures in all), six walked on the moon during Apollo: Armstrong, Aldrin, Conrad, Scott, Young, and Cernan. Framed to 17.5" x 21.5". A truly magnificent, one-of-a-kind signed space photograph! From the collection of renowned former physical trainer of the astronauts Joe Garino. This lot is accompanied by a signed certificate of authentication from Garino verifying its provenance.Auction Info
