Description

Apollo 1 Signed Color Crew Photograph, 9.5" x 7", inscribed "To Joe the biggest boondoggler in NASA & USAF/ VG/ Gus Grissom," also signed "Edward H. White II" and "Roger B. Chaffee." Photo is lightly faded. There are mounting traces on verso which have thinned the backing in some areas, not affecting the photo. The prime crew for the first manned Apollo space flight was named at a press conference held at the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston on March 21, 1966. This photograph was taken on April 1, 1966. On January 27, 1967, Grissom, White, and Chaffee died in a flash fire aboard the Apollo 1 spacecraft during a launch pad test at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Their Apollo launch had been scheduled for February 21st. Grissom's sense of humor is evident in his twice-signed inscription. Because this photo was taken only 10 months before the Apollo fire and the extensive use of the autopen at NASA, authentically signed Apollo 1 crew photographs are virtually non-existent. From the collection of renowned former physical trainer of the astronauts Joe Garino. This lot is accompanied by a signed certificate of authentication from Garino verifying its provenance.
