Description

Zerelda James Samuel: An Important 1897 Photo Album. According to the inscription on the inside front cover, the album was presented to Zerelda on October 29, 1897, and contained photos taken on September 26. However, since two different locations are represented, it seems more likely that just the bulk of the photos, the ones taken at the James farm, are referenced. The images are snapshot-sized and in excellent condition except for the first one, which has some light wrinkling and discoloration in the lower left-hand corner.
(1) Zee (Mrs. Jesse) James on the front porch of her Kansas City home at 3402 Tracy;
(2) A memorial to Jesse, showing his portrait, mourning ribbons, etc. ;
(3) Jesse, Jr. on horseback;
(4) Jesse, Jr. at his father's grave;
(5) Frank James and Zerelda Samuel (mother) on the front porch at the James farm;
(6) A family photo with Jesse, Jr. in front row (2nd from left) and Zerelda (top left) in second row;
(7) Shed at the James farm;
(8) Barn at the James farm;
(9) Zee (Mrs. Jesse) James on front porch at Kansas City home.
An extremely important group of original photos. The last image is found published in Stella James' familiar book In the Shadow of Jesse James, page 20, where it appears "Courtesy of Ethelrose James." This must be a different print, however, since none of the other images in the album are published by Stella.
