Description

Jesse James: A Rare Cabinet-Size Photo Published by Mitchell, Kansas City, from the Collection of Harry Hoffman. Perhaps the most familiar image of Jesse James, it depicts him at approximately the age of twenty-seven, taken in Nebraska City, Nebraska in 1875. This photo was part of the collection sold by Harry Hoffman to Frank Foster in 1948. It is listed on the formal inventory of the collection, and in somewhat more detail on Hoffman's handwritten list. (See website description for images of the documents, copies of which will accompany this lot).

Contemporary ink notations at the top and bottom read "(undecipherable word) taken at age 27", and "Jesse W. James Born 1847 assassinated April 3, 1882 Leader of the James Band. " The reverse side is also inscribed, this time in pencil, in what appears to be the same hand: birth and death dates and "Jesse W. James taken about 1875 27 yrs old" and "copied from a daguerreotype", as well as a large notation "X5".

There is light, even surface soiling and fairly minor corner damage to the Mitchell mount. Several words of the inscriptions have inexplicably faded, even though in the same ink as the other words, which are quite bold. Nonetheless, a pleasing overall appearance on this rare Jesse James artifact with important Harry Hoffman provenance. Size 4.25" x 6.5".
