Cole Younger: A Very Rare Large Signed Photo from the Collection of Harry Hoffman. Boldly signed "Yours Truly, Cole Younger" on the mount. This wonderful photo is still as Hoffman framed it! At the top he has added an ode which he authored, "dedicated to his esteemed friend, Cole Younger." The 6.5" oval photo is glued onto the mount, which has a rectangular-shaped discoloration in the lower left-hand corner as shown (quite possibly a paper conservator could clean this, but we felt it was better to keep the piece in its original state).There is a complete trail of provenance beginning with Harry Hoffman's notarized 1948 inventory and bill of sale by which he transfers his collection, including this listed signed photo, to Frank Foster of Springfield, Missouri. There is also a second handwritten inventory in Hoffman's hand listing this item, part of his letter to Foster offering to sell him his entire James/Younger collection for the sum of $200! In a 1979 handwritten document his son transfers ownership to another Springfield collector, Ed Owens, who in a 1982 bill of sale transfers twelve items from the Hoffman collection including this signed photo, to Wilbur Zink. This autographed Cole Younger photo, rare in any form, is especially important because of its origins with Hoffman, and surely one of the most important pieces in the Wilbur Zink collection.
