Description
Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) Headquarters Flag. SHAPE is the successor to SHAEF (Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Forces). SHAPE was established on April 2, 1951 in Rocquencourt, France, to address the ongoing post-war needs for defense of western Europe. SHAPE refers to both the organization and the building in which it is housed. From 1951 to 1967, SHAPE was originally headquartered in France and is responsible for the planning and execution of combined joint operations in order to meet Alliance political objectives. This flag is an approximately 48" X 84" wool flag with a Bonnaz embroidered, double-faced emblem centered on the green field. The flag is finished with a roped header that is a combination of a sleeve and canvas upper and lower hoist reinforcements for the two brass Inglefield clips. Inserted into the upper hoist is a typical British stiffener to aid in "two blocking" the flag. The hoist in unmarked.
Green is rarely encountered in military headquarters and command flags; thus, the bright green field makes the SHAPE flag quite distinctive. The flag places the badge of SHAPE in the center: within a golden-yellow circlet, two golden-yellow unsheathed swords in front of a stylized silver starburst, encircled by a demi-wreath of olive, also in golden-yellow. On the circlet is the motto in Latin, Vigilia Pretium Libertatis often attributed to Thomas Jefferson, it translated "Vigilance is the price of Liberty."
Condition: Good, used, worn and soiled from use with a frayed fly end.
This flag was formerly in the collection of Dr. Clarence Rungee, and is accompanied by his original museum inventory sheet with identifying information, along with a 1952 letter of authentication and transmittal from Col. Robert J. Wood at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe.
