    Description

Wooden Cowhide Covered Trunk. A relic of Camp Supply, Indian Territory! Wooden trunk with a slightly domed lid, covered with cowhide, 42" long, 17" deep, and 20 ½" wide. The cowhide is fixed in
place in part by narrow (½") leather straps fastened to the trunk by brass tacks. The outside is fitted with two iron hinges, iron wire handles, and iron hasp and lock. The interior is lined with the original decorated paper and maker's label: "John Gilbert/at his shop opposite the door of the State House, Boston. . . ." Rolled up inside the trunk is a full 7' buffalo hide, tanned and supple. Camp Supply, I.T. (now Oklahoma), about 90 miles south of the Santa Fe Trail at Fort Dodge, Kansas, was established in 1868 to support General Philip Sheridan's winter campaign against the Cheyenne and the Kiowa. By the time the center of the buffalo hunt began moving to the Southern Plains in the mid-1870s, the post was garrisoned by Buffalo Soldiers of the 10th Cavalry and had become a principal source of supply and protection for both Indians and the white hunters. Fort Griffin in the Texas Panhandle was a full 270 miles south. In 1878 the Army renamed the post Fort Supply and expanded its range of operations. After 1880, when business in the Panhandle stopped being profitable, merchant Charles Rath moved his goods and equipment north to Fort Supply. Until the fort was abandoned in 1894, its soldiers patrolled the northern boundaries of the last active buffalo hunting region in the U.S.
