Western Sheriff's or Gambler's Vest. Interesting man's vest made of deerskin, rawhide, bone and ticking. There are three rows of pockets on each front panel. The panels and pocket flaps have green silk piping. An inked inscription on the interior reads: "Worn by John Slaughter Sheriff of Cochise Co. Ariz. 1887-1889. To Capt. Aldrich by Amy Babett." This inscription post-dates 1889 and may nor may not be accurate, as there is no written documentation. "Texas John" Slaughter was a Confederate soldier, Texas Ranger, rancher, cattle driver on the Chisum Trail and celebrated lawman. The renegade Geronimo was captured on his San Bernardino Ranch in Arizona. He was a compulsive poker player and may, assuming the attribution is correct, worn this vest during one of his games. The vest appears of the right age but, unfortunately, we have no picture of him wearing it. In any event, a wonderful "vest-ige" of old Arizona.
