Wells, Fargo & Co.: Winchester Pump Riot Shotgun. Firearms such as this were a necessary component in the day-to-day activities of any express company entrusted with gold and other valuables. It is a Model 1897, 12-gauge, Winchester pump-action riot shotgun with a 20" barrel. The metal has been stamped "W.F. & Co." under the serial number. In addition, the base of the stock has been stamped "W.F. & Co. 28". There are slight differences in the two sets of stampings which we feel is a good sign. The consignor purchased the gun at a 1987 auction. It had a tag (no longer present) indicating it was from the Beekman Bank in Jacksonville, Oregon. Research tells us that Cornelius C. Beekman founded Beekman's Express in Jacksonville, O.T. in 1855, primarily serving Yreka and Crescent City. He sold out to Wells Fargo in 1863 and became their agent in Jacksonville. Jacksonville is today a museum town and the Beekman Bank Building still stands, we believe. The gun is fully functional.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
