    Description

    Driving of the Golden Spike

Utah Cowboy Diary: Witness at Promontory Point. 3" x 6" leather diary for 1869, typical of the Civil War period. The owner's name, Terrence J. Cantwell of Hartford City, Indiana, is written on the inside front cover and facing page. There are scattered entries throughout the year plus some memorandum of expenses at the end of the book, all written in pencil. Cantwell worked as a cowboy during this period. On June 11th, he writes: "Passed Fort Ruby & old stage station & went on to springs on top of mountain. No water. Distance 15 miles. Traded calf. Discharged Jim." On October 26th, "Lt. Halloran & set of soldiers left for the head of river for deserters." Most importantly, he was at Promontory Point, Utah for the historic "Driving of the Golden Spike". On May 10th, he relates: "Saw the last rail laid & the Gold & Silver spikes drove on the completion of the N.P.R.R." He also lists the engines of the C.P.R.R.: "Ranger Rattler Jupiter Whirlwind Verdi Tiger Leviathan". Some loss to spine and back cover, but contents are excellent.
