Trio of Badges Belonging to Texas Ranger Johnny Krumnow Accompanied by His Letter of Authenticity. Johnny Krumnow began his law enforcement career in 1949 when he joined the Texas Department of Public Safety. In June of 1957 he became a Texas Ranger and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1975. While serving in the Rangers he was involved in several investigations and shoot outs. The lot includes Krumnow's circular Department of Public Safety Texas Rangers nickel-silver badge with enameled royal blue highlights. The badge measures 1.75" in diameter, is pin back, and bears a "Haltoms / Ft. Worth" maker mark and the stamped numerals "133" on the reverse. Additionally two of Krumnow's iconic Texas Ranger badges constructed from five peso Mexican silver coins which have been hammered slightly convex and voided to create the iconic Texas "Lone Star" motif are included. One badge, which Krumnow's letter of authenticity describes as the one he wore from 1969-1975, bears a "NEL-SIL / HOU-TEX" back mark. The obverse is engraved "JOHNNY KRUMNOW SGT. CO. A TEXAS RANGER". The other badge of identical construction, was worn by Krumnow after his retirement. The obverse is engraved "JOHNNY KRUMNOW SGT TEXAS RANGERS" and this example bears no maker's mark. All badges display honest wear but are in very good condition. The lot is accompanied by a notarized two-page letter dated July 18, 1989 from Krumnow to noted Houston collector Brent Burg in which he gives a brief history of his career and the badges in this lot. From the estate of Houston collector Brent Burg.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
