Studio Photograph of Wild-West Showman Franklin D. "White Beaver" Powell With Contemporary Newspaper Obituary. Sepia, 4" x 5.5", mounted to a studio mat to an overall size of 6" x 7.25". Mat bears the studio mark of Pryor of La Crosse, Wisconsin. This is a formal portrait of the Indian scout, wild-west showman, patent-medicine manufacturer, and politician. In rather faded contemporary ink on the lower front edge of the mat is written: "Col. F. D. Powell "White Beaver"/ and Friend of Col. W. F. Cody/ Died May 8, 1906". This photograph may have been used with his newspaper obituary. The verso bears the printing instructions: "Single half tone cut down/ Make it so the hands/ will not show". Powell's life is cloaked in legend and likely a good deal of prevarication. He claimed to have been given the Indian name "White Beaver" after saving the life of a Sioux chief's daughter. His association with "Buffalo Bill" Cody allegedly started while the two served as Army scouts in the Nebraska Territory. Powell and Cody partnered in a number of far-fetched business schemes. The 2.25" x 2.25" contemporary newspaper obituary clipping reads in part: "El Paso, Texas, May 8 - Col. F. D. Powell, the famous Indian scout, known as White Beaver, died on an east bound train from Los Angeles yesterday of heart disease. He was in charge of Col. Cody's interests." "Cody's interests" were thought to be a scheme to colonize Mexican lands. The image has a few scratches but is otherwise sharp and with good contrast. The studio mat is worn at the edges and at the corner of the upper left verso.
