Photograph of William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody and His Crony Frank Powell at Cody's Ranch in Wyoming, Circa 1903 Offered in a Beautiful Native American Beaded Leather Frame. The sepia photograph measures 4.75" x 3.75" and is housed in a beaded leather frame measuring 7.5" x 6.25" overall. The photograph features both men standing holding Winchester lever-action rifles of various models, posed in front of Cody's Wyoming ranch house after a successful big horn sheep hunt. The verso of the image has a contemporary caption, in ink: "Wm F. Cody "Buffalo Bill"/ & Frank Powell - / at Cody's Ranch in Wyo./ 1903". Franklin D. Powell was every bit as flamboyant as his friend, "Buffalo Bill" Cody. He was an army scout, a plainsman, a sidekick, a drinking crony, and later a partner of the venerable "Buffalo Bill". He arrived in La Crosse, Wisconsin as a sharpshooter co-starring with Buffalo Bill in the melodrama "The Prairie Wolf." Later he would hang his shingle in La Crosse where he started selling various patent medicines guaranteed to cure rheumatism, cramps, cholera, warts, cancer, croup, baldness, dropsy and constipation. In 1893 Powell and Buffalo Bill opened the Cody-Powell Panamalt Co. but closed the business in 1894, after patent medicines got the moniker "the Great American Fraud." Powell died in 1906 on a train in Texas. He was 59 years old and headed for Mexico where it was alleged he and "Buffalo Bill" had a scheme to colonize Mexican lands. This superb image, along with the beautiful beaded frame, is in excellent condition.
