Pair of Silver Overlaid No. 400 Spurs by J.O. Bass Tulia, Texas.
Original and rare maker-marked No. 400 J.O. Bass spurs. 2 1/2-inch drop shank and 9-point, 2-inch rowels. Fine, matching engraved silver overlays over 1-inch bands. Trade mark two-tone brass and silver hearts on swinging buttons. Off side on one marked: MADE BY / J.O. BASS / TULIA / NO. 400. The No. 400 is one of only two catalog patterns that Bass produced. Fine old brown leather straps with square buckles.
According to Martin and House in their "Bit and Spur Makers InThe Texas Tradition", (page 64) J.O. Bass products are known for quality and unique markings. In a time when few makers marked their work, Bass meticulously stamped the off side of the right spur with the Tulia address. His customers included Texas Rangers. c1910.

Condition: Very good. Normal age wear and nice age patina.

Provenance: The Roger and Linda Carpenter Collection.
