Manuscript Document Listing Emmitt Dalton, Bob Dalton, & Bass Reeves as Indian Territory Marshals, 1890. Marshall Emmitt Dalton, Bob Dalton & Bass Reeves- all listed as Marshals in this five page manuscript , from Fort Smith Arkansas, January 30, 1890. It has a manuscript listing of over 100 U. S. Marshals from Judge Issac Parker's court that were tracking down criminals in the Indian Territory. The Dalton brothers operated on both sides of the law, and Bob Dalton was initially appointed Chief of the Indian Police in the Osage Nation. Emmitt became a posseman there, at the same time they opened up a successful horse stealing operation in spite of their police badges. The Dalton Gang finally met their fate when they attempted to rob two banks at the same time in Coffeyville, Kansas. Deputy Bass Reeves was the first Black American lawman on the western frontier. Very interesting manuscript. Measures approximately 8.5" x 14".

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
