    Description

Lot of Two CDVs of Sioux Indian Camps at Fort Laramie, Wyoming Territory, ca. 1863. Fort Laramie was built in 1835 by fur traders and was acquired by the federal government in 1849 for $4,000 to protect travelers on the Oregon trail during the California Gold Rush. The fort's relationship with the Plains Indians began with the Treaty of Fort Laramie in 1851 and later served as the main base of operation for the unsuccessful Powder River Expedition against the Sioux and Cheyenne in 1866. These two rare Civil War-era CDV photographs of Fort Laramie are very early and believed to be done from paintings by C. Moellman, who was an 18 year old private in the 11th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. He was stationed at Fort Laramie in 1863. The first image depicts Fort Laramie at a distance with the American flag flying above and Indian tepees at the outskirts; second image depicts a large group of Sioux Indians dancing in a circle near the Fort.

    Condition:
    Fine, images have good contrast.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
