    Description

Lot of Nineteenth Century Stage Company Ephemera, Circa 1882-1886. Includes a Benton & Billings Stage Company way bill, 10.5" x 16", partially printed and completed in holograph, dated June 29, 1886, listing five passengers and a small amount of goods to be transported. An unnamed Chinese passenger was charged $5, rather than the $10 rate charged other passengers. We assume he was not allowed to ride inside the stage coach, but alongside the driver or on top with the baggage, thereby explaining the reduced rate. Also included is a Fayetteville Omnibus, Mail & Transfer Company pass, 4" x 2.5", and dated 1883. Lastly, the lot includes a bank check from the Benton and Helena Stage Company (although it has been lined out and "Coulson & Martindale" has been substituted by hand), dated August 13, 1882, and issued to William Lowe for "driving stage". All examples with the usual fold creases, else in very good condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
