Little Big Horn: Portrait of 7th Cavalry Lieutenant. 17" x 21" pastel on paper, mounted to a canvas stretcher, titled: "Luther Rector Hare" and signed in the lower right corner "1874 E.R.B." It is housed in a cloth-covered frame with hobnail wood liner measuring 19" x 23" overall. Hare (1851-1929) was a West Pointer who served in the Indian Wars, the Spanish American and Philippine Wars. Though born in Indiana, Hare and his family were primarily Texas residents. After graduating West Point in 1874, he was appointed 2nd Lieutenant with the 7th Cavalry and was stationed at Fort Abraham Lincoln in the eventful year of 1876. At the time of the Custer Massacre, he was on detached duty with Lt. Charles Varnum and Indian scouts. Rejoining Company K, he engaged in the fighting atop Reno Hill, serving as Major Marcus Reno's acting adjutant. He was commended for bravery at Little Big Horn and promoted to 1st Lieutenant on June 25, 1876. He later fought in the 1877 Nez Perce War, the Battles of Canyon Creek and Wounded Knee. Research material detailing his military career is included with the lot.
