    Description

Large size Photograph: Bird's-Eye View of Fort Apache, Arizona Territory, 1897. Established as Camp Ord in spring of 1870, named in honor of General O.C. Ord, Commander of Arizona. This post changed its name to Camp Mogollon August 1, 1870, then Camp Thomas September 12, 1870 in honor of Major General George W. Thomas, the "Rock of Chickamauga" of Civil War fame. The post was finally designated Camp Apache on February 2, 1871 as a token of friendship with the nearby tribe. Renamed Fort Apache April 5, 1879 and gained great significance after many tribes were gathered in the nearby San Carlos Reservation.

Photograph taken by Erwin Baer, from Prescott, Arizona of the "Fort Apache Arizona 1897" (In period ink verso). Great Birdseye view of Fort Apache, depicts all of the Forts buildings, stables, etc. Very nice printed backmark for this photographer. Measures approximately 8.50" x 5.25".

    Condition:
Good-Very, light contrast, two chips at bottom.
