Large Format Chief Rain in the Face Barry Photograph, Ca. 1910s-1920s. In the late 1870s and early 1880s, D. F. Barry traveled to Fort Yates, Buford and other Dakota Territory Forts. He photographed famous Indian chiefs, warriors, and scouts including Sitting Bull, Red Cloud, and Rain in the Face. He also photographed important forts and battlefields of the Plains. He photographed General George A. Crook, his soldiers, trappers, and pioneers. In 1883, Barry returned to Bismarck where operated his studio. He had a great friendship with Buffalo Bill and photographed many aspects of his Wild West Show. In 1890, Barry moved his studio to Superior, Wisconsin. Here he sold his Dakota Territory and Indian photographs.

Very nice "Rain in the Face" studio image showing him posing with his war bonnet, fringed jacket, etc. On verso the David F. Barry paper advertisement. Blindstamped in photograph "Copyright by D. F. Barry". Also Barry blindstamp on mount. Measures approximately 9.50" x 14".

    Fine-very fine, nice contrast.
