Kit Carson: Western Hotel Registry. This 11" x 17" single leaf (inscribed on both sides) was excised from the Guest Book and Register of "The Drovers Hotel". It lists the guests who checked in between July 5th and July 9th in an unspecified year, likely circa 1865. It also lists their hometowns and destinations. Based on this information, we surmise the hotel was located in Colorado or New Mexico. We see a Captain Smith, Lieutenant Gordon and Corporal Snyder, indicating a Civil War or Indian War vintage. On July 7th, Kit Carson registered at the hotel, bound for Pueblo. His place of residence is listed as "S.O.M." He was not assigned a room in the hotel and may have been staying in Room #4 with Joe Weller who registered the day before. The handwriting and information on the Weller and Carson entries match, and Weller may have signed for both. The Carson signature is not his. This is a fun relic of the West.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
