John C. Hays Signed Surveyor's Field Notes. Four pages of a bifolium, 7.5" x 12.25", San Antonio, February 13, 1846. The manuscript text begins on the first page below a plat map of Bexar County: "Field notes of the corporation tract of the city of San Antonio." Hays had been elected the County Surveyor for Bexar County in 1841, and here he acknowledges and verifies a survey report made for the proposed area in San Antonio. The report and Hays' statement are in the hand of Deputy Surveyor of Bexar County, John James. Hays' verification reads, in full: "I John C Hays, County Survr: Bexar County do hereby certify that I have examined the foregoing field notes and find them correct and survey made according to Law." Below this, in blue ink, Hays has signed "John C. Hays C.T.B.C."

Along with his military duties, John C. Hays worked as a surveyor. The Texas Republic was expanding, and the job of a surveyor was dangerous due to many of the lands being inhabited by hostile Native Americans or invading Mexicans. As Hays and his Texas Rangers had patrolled the area around San Antonio and other frontier borders, he had acquired valuable information about the land in addition to skills that allowed him to stay safe while surveying. Upon his retirement from the Rangers, he was appointed head surveyor for lands and roads to the west of San Antonio.

Condition: Toned throughout, a bit heavier along the folds, heavy foxing along vertical margin. Partial separations along folds, else fine, with all ink remaining bold.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
