    Description

James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok: A Business Card or, More Likely, a Pass To "Scouts of the Plains" or One of the Other Plays Hickok Appeared in with His Pals "Buffalo Bill" Cody and "Texas Jack" Omohundro. No other examples are known, making this a sensational find. Hickok obviously had show business aspirations. After gaining national fame - or, more accurately, notoriety - through George Ward Nichols' extravagant portrait in Harper's New Monthly Magazine in 1867 and additional lurid reporting by Henry M. Stanley (yes, the same journalist who found Dr. Livingston in Africa), he allowed himself to be inveigled into headlining a "buffalo hunt" at Niagara Falls in 1872. Then, beginning in September, 1873, Hickok wowed audiences for a season - playing himself. W. Beaumont Duhring had been an actor and stage manager, but by 1869 he had established himself as a theatrical agent in New York. The card is 3.5" x 2.25". There is minor water staining which does not obscure any of the printing. On the back is some scrapbook residue. But there is no paper loss, and the card is in overall excellent condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
