    J. M. Stanley 1872 Chromolithograph: On the War Path. 23" x 31" chromolithograph on heavy paper stock, copied from the painting "On the War Path" by John Mix Stanley. Signed in the plate "J. M. Stanley 1871". Drawn on stone by Robert T. Bishop of Washington and printed by Calvert Lithographing Company in 1872. In 1853, Stanley was the "imbedded" artist for Isaac Stevens' U. S. Survey for the proposed northern route of the Pacific Railroad. This print records an episode from that expedition, when the survey party met an Indian contingent crossing through Cadotte's Pass in the Rocky Mountains. Stanley had some of his paintings made as chromolithographs by a German company, but the Franco-Prussian War halted that arrangement. He then contracted with Calvert Litho of Detroit. Twenty lithographic stones were used to produce the print of "On the War Path", but Stanley died in 1872 and a fire next to the Calvert warehouse damaged or destroyed many of the stones used in the printing. It is estimated only 100 copies were made before production halted. Some of the examples that appear are mounted to canvas to simulate a painting. This one is paper print complete with the registration marks in the border. The colors are vibrant and saturated. The condition is excellent.
