Nez Perce Indians in Idaho: A Four-Page 1889 Manuscript Letter. Written from the "Nez Perce Agency Idaho Ter." to Miss AC Fletcher, US Special Land Agent. "I present to you, most important relic, the noted "Pipe" of my tribe, the Nez Perce Indians...With it goes all the pride of my people, and beware of abusing this most sacred trust." An eloquent and beautifully written history of the pipe and its use, which goes back a century. The relic went through Chief Joseph's war in 1877, and was owned by Chief Looking Glass, who was killed by General Miles at the Battle of Bear Paw Mountains in Montana. A really exceptional letter, neatly penned and easily read, although it is nonetheless accompanied by a typed transcript. Excellent condition. 8" x 12.5".
