FRINGED POSSIBLE BAG WITH NATIVE AMERICAN INFLUENCE - ca.1840-70. This wonderful darkened leather "possibles" bag is decorated with fringe on the outer and inner linings, and has a smaller fringed strip added to the reverse in the Native American style. The bag itself measures 8"x 8" not including the fringe which is ample and extends a full 5" from the bag all around, with longer, thin fringe 7" from the bottom. This bag is likely an early frontier or rural item belonging to an early outdoorsman as it still contains flax for starting a fire, a small piece of leather and some flint, which may have been added later. The strap, which was used to carry this from the shoulder, is gone and only the stitching remains on the reverse side of the bag. The bag is sewn with early natural thread and is completely intact, only slightly coming loose at the top of the right side. This rare bag is in fine overall condition considering the context of outdoor use.
