    Description

Imperial Size Photograph of McNeal Little Banking Co. Guthrie, Indian Territory ca 1890s . Unlike Rome, Guthrie was built in a day, or more correctly speaking, half a day. For when the noonday sun beamed down on Guthrie, it was but a city prospective a vast field of vegetation, decked with wild flowers, apparently "born to blush unseen" a plot of virgin soil, saved by the feet of the Indian and the sacrilegious "Sooner". But that evening's sun bade good night to a tented city of 15000 souls. It was the miracle not only of our age, but of all ages. Train after train, in quick succession, unloaded its cargo of humanity at the depot; and what had been but a country station, in a few hours became one of the most important on the line. The settlement of Guthrie will never be forgotten by those who took part in the rush and excitement. The next thing to be done after staking out the lots was to have an election of temporary officers, who should maintain order until a regular election could be held. This was accordingly done.

Photograph of Guthrie depicting Signs in this town, "National Bank Block, May 1st, 1889 & McNeal-Little Banking Company". McNEAL, J. W., president of McNeal-Little Banking Co., Corner of 1st and Oklahoma. According to Guthrie, Indian Territory 1899 Business Directory. Measures approximately 8.50" x 5.25".
