    Imperial Size Photograph of Coal Miners in Rouse, Colorado, 1890s-1900s. This image depicts the tipple, the structure where coal is cleaned and loaded in railroad cars. Crew are posing for the photographer Davis, of Walsenburg, Colorado. There are 13 coal miners, one has a candle on his hat, holding a lunch bucket, one holding an oil can, the rest of them look a little dirty from coal dust- a great Colorado coal mining image.

    Notation on image: Tipple crew Rouse, Colo. The town and mine Rouse were named after S. F. Rouse of the Colorado Coal and Iron Company. This town is six miles south of Walsenburg, Colorado. The coal mine was operated by Colorado Fuel and Iron. Rouse was the No. 4 mine of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company. It opened in 1888 as the biggest coal mine in the state, and in 1889 was the leading producer in Huerfano County, averaging 70 rail cars a day. Measures approximately 9.75" x 6.75".
