Imperial Size Photograph Birdseye View Deadwood, South Dakota ca 1890s - The city of Deadwood, seat of Lawrence County, in the Black Hills of Western South Dakota was incorporated 1876. The city was named for the dead trees that were found in the narrow canyon (Deadwood Gulch). The town attained notoriety for the murder of Wild Bill Hickok, and remains the final resting place of Hickok and Calamity Jane, as well as slightly less famous figures such as Seth Bullock. It became known for its wild and almost lawless reputation, during which time murder was common, and punishment for murders not always fair and impartial. This is a very nice birds-eye view image of Deadwood, South Dakota.
Photograph depicts a large bustling town in the Black Hills of the Dakota's. You can read many business street signs from this perspective. In foreground foothills you can see some Mining operations. No photographer identification. Measures approximately 10" x 8".
