DescriptionHandcuffs and Original Leather Case Belonging to an Identified Texas Sheriff. Worn lettering carved on one side of the case reads, "J. M. Weaver Sheriff Navarro Co. Texas." Good display condition, and clearly exhibiting much actual use. The cuffs measure 5.875" x 2.75", and the original key is attached.
J. Melvin Weaver was a prominent leader and land-owner in Navarro County and served as county sheriff from 1892-96. During his tenure oil was struck in Corsicana, leading to a large influx of workers and those who made their livelihoods from them. Undoubtedly Sheriff Weaver had his hands full, explaining the clear signs of use on the cuffs and case.
