    Description

Goodnight Ranch: A Marvelous Early Scrimshawed Steer Horn from One of the Most Famous Texas Ranches. A large 16½" horn decorated with a male buffalo and a female with calf, an intertwined rope motif, and "Buffalo Goodnight Ranch Panhandle of Texas." Original leather cap with tarnished brass fittings. While impossible to date, this horn has a definite patina of age, and by the latter 19th century the buffalo were long gone from the Goodnight Ranch, and just about everywhere else across the Western expanse.

The Goodnight Ranch, founded by George Adair and Charles Goodnight, is still in operation near Amarillo in the Texas Panhandle, and is found on the National Register of Historic Places. At its peak in 1883 it encompassed 1.335 million acres of land and a herd of 100,000 cattle! A detailed history of the ranch accompanies this great Texas artifact.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
