    More Information:

One letter (five pages) was written at Circle City, Alaska, November 10, 1896. It narrates the story of Burns' journey from Juneau to the Yukon, portions of which were "on the steamer 'Rustler'" and in a "pack train". "Altogether," he writes of his luggage on the trip, "I had twenty-four bags, including my roll of blankets my big telescope bag, and tent, a stove, guns, and a package of saws." This letter includes hand-drawings of a map and a sled.

The other (eight and one-quarter pages) was written from the "Steamer Al-Ki, between Juneau and Seattle" on February 17, 1897. In this letter, Burns writes his parents a "synopsis of my trip, a smattering of business, and an introduction to a more detailed account". He includes a description of towns, the countryside, and the swarms of mosquitoes he encountered, as well as an account about the nineteen days he worked on the discovery claim. Burns also reports on his own various claims and the amounts he had discovered. This letter includes two hand-drawn maps. Both letters offer fascinating and informative accounts of the Yukon gold rush.
