Description

Wells Fargo & Company Treasure Box with Character ca. 1860s. Gold bars, dust, and coins, legal papers, checks, and Exchanges traveled in the famous Wells Fargo & Company green treasure box. These boxes where stored under the driver's seat of the stagecoach in the "Boot" beneath his feet. When filled with gold & silver bullion, they could weigh as much as 150 lbs. Wells Fargo & Company carried the most valuable assets of the West. But these sturdy green boxes constructed of Ponderosa pine, oak, and iron were highly prized by highway bandits.

The real security of the Wells Fargo & Company treasure boxes came from the stagecoach guard know as the "Wells Fargo shotgun messenger." These were the kind of men you could depend on. If thieves were foolhardy enough to hold up and steal a treasure box in transit, they would find themselves staring down the barrel of a sawed-off shotgun. Unfortunately, these treasure boxes on the stages attracted outlaws. Between 1870 and 1884, bandits attempted to rob Wells Fargo gold shipments 347 times on stagecoaches. In those fourteen years, Wells Fargo & Company secured 226 convictions.

This treasure box has tons of character; it's all original with lock and key, original leather handles on this box, has not been messed with. The top of box shows the wear from the driver resting his feet upon it as it sat in the Stagecoach boot. You can still see the Wells Fargo & Co painted front, with some of the of the white paint on name "Fargo" worn away from the lock rubbing against the wooden box. Has Manufacturer's stencil inside box "J. Y. Ayer, 3740 Seventeenth St. S. F. Cal." Measures approximately 20" x 12" x 10".

    Condition:
Very good, has even wear on box, (as stated) not messed with.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
