    Description

Leland Stanford: California Mining Certificates. Framed pair of stock certificates issued in California. The first measures 9" x 4" and is for fifty shares of the Syndicate Mining Company of San Francisco. It is dated February 23, 1884, signed by J. Stadtfeld, Jr. and Charles H. Fish, and issued to J. Gillon, Jr. It has slight discoloration at four spots from previous mounting in an album. The second certificate measures 11" x 5.5". It is signed by Leland Stanford, but is not otherwise filled in. It was issued for shares of stock in the Bodie Bluff Consolidated Mining Company of Aurora, California in the 1860's. The central vignette shows the mining operation with the names of eleven mines or claims inscribed on the side of the mountain. Leland Stanford (1824-1893) was one of the leading players in the development of California and the West. He served as Governor and Senator for the state, founded Stanford University, oversaw a vast mercantile empire, was President of the Southern Pacific and Central Pacific railroads and presided at the driving of the golden spike at Promontory, Utah in 1869, thereby completing the transcontinental railroad.
