    Gold Rush-Era San Francisco Committee of Vigilance Membership Certificate. 15.25" x 21.75" stone lithograph by Britton & Rey, S.F., designed and drawn on stone by Charles Nahl, titled Committee of Vigilance of San Francisco/ Reorganized 15th May/ 1856/ for the mutual protection of life and property., with manuscript name Frank G. Edwards, No. 797, who was attached to "Compy. B 'Citizens' Guard'", signed by President Wm. T. Coleman, Secretary Isaac Bluxome, Jr. and Treasurer William Meyer. Central printed escutcheon with lithographed surround of patriotic, industrial, and militaristic vignettes. Frank G. Edwards was a forty-niner, city father and fire department leader whose home is on the National Register of Historic Places. The certificate is mounted on board with scattered light foxing and a 2" tear at top. The San Francisco Vigilance Movement consisted of two popular ad hoc organizations formed during the Gold Rush period in 1851 and 1856. Their stated purpose was to reign in crime and government corruption. They were among the most notorious and, especially the 1856 Committee, the most successful organizations in the vigilante tradition of the American West.
