    Description

    California Stage Coach Company Waybill and Oath of Employment. 9.5" x 16" single sheet (unfolded) titled: "Way-Bill California and Oregon United States Mail Line. Oregon Stage Company." Issued on May 1, 1867 for the run from Yreka to Portland. Includes the name of the agent, driver, passengers, destinations, arrival times and fares received. Sold with an 8" x10" signed "Certificate of the Oath of Mail Contractors and Carriers Required by Law" completed by the driver James Bell. Besides the usual stipulations, the driver affirms that he did not hold any office or give assistance to "persons engaged in armed hostility thereto" (i.e., the Confederate States of America). Signed at Siskiyou, California, July 24, 1866. Besides taking on passengers, the coach lines earned money by carrying the U.S. mail.
