California Gold Rush: The Miner's Ten Commandments. This serio-comic handbill, measuring 9" x 11" and printed on safety-stock by the "Sun Print, San Francisco" was published in 1853 by James M. Hutchings of Placerville, California. Titled "The Miner's Ten Commandments", it depicts ten scenes recounting the progress of the miner in his quest to strike it rich (reminiscent of the old sawhorse "Ten Nights in a Barroom"). Using biblical language and imagery, it goes through all the commandments, each one appropriately illustrated (e.g., "Thou shalt not make unto thyself any false claim..." or "Thou shalt not grow discouraged, nor think of going home before thou hast made thy 'pile'"). It concludes with the miner returning to his loved ones and family. It is signed by the author, "Forty-Nine." This is a terrific relic of the Gold Rush of 1849, printed where it all happened.
