California Gold Rush Recollections: An Outstanding Eighteen Page Manuscript. Over 3000 words penned in 1878, an autobiographical autograph letter signed by one Samuel Curtis Upham. The letter recounts Upham's role in the early days of California, beginning with his January 1849 voyage around Cape Horn, a passage of 201 days. He immediately proceeded to the gold diggings on the Calaveras River and commenced operations, but an attack of rheumatism "soon put an end to [his] gold digging." Not to be thwarted from a share in the California prosperity, however, Upham joined with five other printers and started up the Sacramento Transcript (published out of San Francisco), the first daily newspaper published in California. While Upham sold his interest in the paper and returned to Philadelphia in 1851 to enter the newspaper business there, he maintained "a deep interest in everything pertaining to California, and my pen is never idle when I can do the Golden State a good turn." He remained active in various organizations such as the "Associated Pioneers of the Territorial Days of California," of which he served as vice president. The manuscript includes a poem and three songs written by himself for the Society.

A fascinating personal account of the career of a mid-nineteenth century American entrepreneur. Each page 7.75" x 9.75", written on both sides. Fine condition, and written in very legible handwriting.
