Description

Black Hills Hunter/Prospector Letter from 1876. Interesting 7 3/4" x 10 1/2" 2-page letter written from Carr, Colorado on May 19, 1876, just five weeks before Custer's death at Little Big Horn. The writer, "Win T.", was apparently a prospector who had his share of run-ins with the Indians. In part: "There is lots of Indians out this way, but none just around here. Carr is about 300 miles from the Black Hills. There is piles of them up there. They are just going for the miners now. They kill five or six every day and steal all the horses and stock they can get their hands on... Don't go to the Black Hills or you will get scalped. There is no wealth there." He then draws a picture of himself on the second page as the "Mighty Indian Slayer".
