Adolph Sutro and the Comstock Lode: Stock Certificate and Legal Notice. This lot has two items related to a "modern" engineering miracle... the Sutro Tunnel. The tunnel was constructed between 1869 and 1879 and aided production of silver ore in the famous "Comstock Lode" of Virginia City, Nevada. It provided needed ventilation and drainage and facilitated the extension of mining operations to untapped veins. Efforts to promote the project began in 1864 and appeared doomed by pressure from powerful politicians in 1869, but Sutro's dramatic plea to miners "saved the day" and work proceeded to completion. Sutro sold out his interest in the enterprise in 1879 and moved to San Francisco, where he amassed great wealth and was elected mayor. The lot contains a 7.5" x 15" printed legal notice or newspaper extra titled "Virginia City, Nev. October 4, 1969", describing efforts by the "Sutro Tunnel Company" to organize in such a way as to raise capital in an efficient manner. It is sold together with an 8" x 12.5" stock certificate, dated April 27, 1887, for one hundred shares in the "Sutro Tunnel Company". It is signed by President Moritz Meyer and Secretary Pelham W. Ames and issued to John Landers. It has wonderful vignettes of miners, trains, steamboats and an Indian with a tomahawk resting on a hilltop overlooking everything.
