1866 Letter With Lurid Content From the Montana Gold Fields. Four pages, 7" x 9.25", Diamond City, Montana Territory, October 30, 1866. A fascinating letter that alludes to many events which only serve to pique the reader's curiosity. It is apparent that the writer has been involved in some rather "unpleasant" business. He writes in part: "Capt. Greene was not killed, but he or somebody else killed a man by the name of Sheehy (pro She he) in a row about some mining ground. My case was rather a critical one for me. I came very near being killed myself. My friend Mallory was killed dead on the spot. There is no blame attached to me. I tried to avoid the ruffian. I suppose you saw a statement of the affair in the papers which was nearly correct, only the fellow did not owe me anything, as the paper stated. He was a fellow that I never spoke to or had any acquaintance with, but enough on this unpleasant subject." The unknown writer goes on to speak of his poor financial condition and of the migration from the Territories to Salt Lake City. An interesting letter worthy of more research, quite legible with the usual fold creases, in very good condition.
