[Nevada Mining]. Silver Hill Mining Company Abstract of Title Ledger. Measuring approximately 8.5" x 13.75", this Abstract of Title for the Silver Hill Mining Company contains 145 pages, most of which include claims bought, sold, or leased by individuals in the Comstock Lode area. All claims listed within are arranged alphabetically and list both the "grantor" and the "grantee."

In the last half of the book can be found fair copies of bills of sale and deed transfers. Fifteen of the sales/deeds are dated from 1860. Four receipts of sale date from mid-1914. Some of the names represent the prominent men of the local mining area, including John Bigler. Bigler (1805-1871) was the third governor of California and, in that capacity, supported the Foreign Miner's Tax and anti-Chinese legislation. In 1860, he was serving as United States Minister to Chile. Lake Tahoe was originally named for him.

Out of place within the ledger is a guest list for an "Electrical Workers Ball," dated May 8, 1914, and several poems scattered throughout the last half. All but two of the poems are of a lovesick man pining for his beloved; of the other two, one is about Casey Jones and one is too risqué to print.

The boards show moderate to heavy wear, but the pages are in fine condition. The book contains some of the earliest references to mining in the Comstock Lode and is definitely worthy of further research.
