Description

[Klondike Gold Rush]. Photograph of Indian Merchants at Treadwell Mines. Identified as "Indian Merchants at Treadwell Mines," a pencil notation on the verso identifies the year as 1896. Eleven American Indian women are pictured selling handmade baskets and other wares. Treadwell mine, located in the Alaskan panhandle and established in 1881, was, in its day, the largest gold mine in the world, releasing approximately 3 million troy ounces of gold until it was abandoned in 1922. The photograph was taken by Frank LaRoche (1853-1936) of Seattle, Washington, who came to Alaska in 1897 to photograph the Gold Rush. Measuring 7.25" x 4.25" (sight) and mounted to LaRoche's personal, blind stamped mounting board to an overall size of 10.25" x 7". Foxing spots on the board, but the image is fine.
